# Is Your Internet Ready for Your Table Needs POS System? A quick network check

**Your POS is only as steady as the internet behind it.** When the connection gets shaky, card readers drop, printers go offline, and tickets get lost in the middle of a rush. This check takes about 10 minutes, and most of it you can answer yourself without calling anyone.

### **Part 1: Questions you can answer yourself**

Walk through these with your router and your devices in front of you.

#### **How old is your internet box?**

That's your router, or the WiFi box your internet company gave you. If it's more than five years old, it's probably slowing you down, and replacing it is one of the quickest wins on this list.

#### **Does your internet come from a cable or a cell signal?**

If it comes through a cable, you're set for this one. If it runs on a cell signal, keep the box near a window, because a back office or closet can block the signal and leave your connection weak.

#### **How many things use your WiFi?**

Count everything that connects: phones, TVs, tablets, cameras, and music players. Every device shares the same connection, so a long list means less room for your POS when it matters.

#### **Do guests and staff share the POS WiFi?**

They shouldn't. Your POS needs its own network so that guest phones, staff phones, and streaming TVs can't crowd it out during service.

#### **Is old equipment still plugged in?**

Unplug old internet boxes, and turn off any iPads or tablets you don't use anymore. Do this even if you've already cancelled that service, because old equipment can still interfere with your POS.

#### **Do you have an IT company?**

If you do, send them the list in Part 2. They'll know exactly what to do with it.

If you don't, reach out to us and we'll help you sort out what your setup needs.

---

### **Part 2: For your IT person**

Share this section with whoever manages your network.

1. Give every printer and card reader a permanent (reserved) IP address.
2. Set the WiFi channels by hand instead of leaving them on **Auto**.
3. Put the POS on its own network, separate from guest WiFi and TVs.
4. Tell the Table Needs team about any settings that block or limit devices, such as firewalls, content filters, or device limits.

> **Tip:** A reserved IP address keeps each printer and card reader at the same address every day. When devices stay put, your POS can always find them, and that's what keeps tickets firing to the kitchen.

---

### **You're done!**

Once you've worked through both parts, your POS has a steady connection to lean on, and your card readers and printers have a much better shot at staying online through the busiest part of the day.
